A thumbnail is the only type of image that needs to work at two sizes at once: large on YouTube's homepage on a monitor, and tiny in a suggestion list on a phone. An image that ignores this can be technically beautiful and still generate zero clicks.
This list has 50 ready-made prompts, organized by channel niche — tech, tutorials, gaming, finance, vlog, fitness, cooking, education and entertainment. They all follow the same logic: a strong visual element on one side, a clean area on the other for the text, high contrast, and no fine detail that disappears at thumbnail size.
A note before you start: the prompts were written to generate the visual base of the thumbnail, with no text. The reason is explained further down — in short, adding the text afterward gives you much more control and a better result. If you want the general logic of prompt building, the guide on how to write AI prompts covers the complete structure.
Why a thumbnail prompt is different
Most prompt lists treat a thumbnail like any other image. It isn't. Four constraints change everything.
Legibility at thumbnail size. A large share of views come from small screens, where the thumbnail appears just a couple of centimeters wide. This rules out compositions with many elements, fine textures and complex scenes. A good thumbnail has at most two focal points.
Space reserved for text. Almost every thumbnail that works has words on it. If the image is visually busy in all four corners, there's nowhere for the text to breathe. That's why every prompt below asks for half or a third of the frame to be clean.
High contrast. Uniform mid-tone images disappear among the others. Saturated colors, a solid background, and clear separation between subject and background is what makes a thumbnail stand out in a crowded grid.
The duration bar. The video's length appears over the bottom-right corner of the thumbnail. Any important element there will end up partially covered.
💡 Mandatory test: shrink the thumbnail to about 200 pixels wide and look at it on a phone screen. If you can't identify the subject in under a second, it isn't ready.
Size and technical specs
| Item | Specification |
| Recommended resolution | 1280 × 720 pixels |
| Aspect ratio | 16:9 |
| Minimum width | 640 pixels |
| Maximum file size | 2 MB |
| Accepted formats | JPG, PNG, GIF |
| Area to avoid | Bottom-right corner (duration bar) |
| Safe margin | About 5% on each edge |
The 2 MB limit is what most catches people off guard: a high-resolution AI-generated image goes well over that, and YouTube simply rejects the upload. The image compressor fixes it in seconds with no visible difference.
The structure of a thumbnail prompt
All 50 prompts follow the same five blocks. Swapping just the first one already generates a new variation while keeping what makes the thumbnail work.
1. Main subject
A person, an object or a scene — never all three. The subject needs to be identifiable at thumbnail size, which means big, recognizable shapes.
2. Position and free space
Where the subject sits and where space is left over. "Occupying the right half, left side clean" is the most-used formula because Western reading starts from the left.
3. Background and contrast
Solid background, simple gradient, or blurred scene. Never a detailed background. The goal is to separate the subject from the rest clearly.
4. Palette
Two or three saturated colors. Complementary combinations — blue and orange, purple and yellow, red and cyan — stand out more in the YouTube grid than soft harmonic palettes.
5. Format
Always finish with "horizontal 16:9 composition, high contrast, YouTube thumbnail". This guarantees the right framing from the generation itself.
Tech and gadgets (1–6)
A large product, dark background and colored light. This is the standard for the niche because it works: the object is recognizable even at a tiny size.

Why not ask the AI for the text
Image models have improved a lot at writing words, and today it's perfectly possible to ask for a title inside the thumbnail. Even so, for thumbnails it's better to add the text afterward, for three practical reasons.
Size control. A thumbnail's text needs to be huge — usually a quarter or more of the height. The AI tends to place typography proportional to what "looks nice," not to what's legible at thumbnail size.
A/B testing. Swapping just the title while keeping the same image is the most common channel optimization. If the text is baked into the generation, every variation requires regenerating everything.
Channel consistency. Always using the same font, same color and same position builds recognition. The AI varies the typography with every generation.
In practice the workflow is: generate the visual base with one of the prompts above and then add the text over the image, controlling font, size and position. To assemble the whole thumbnail already in the right format, the YouTube thumbnail maker handles it in a single step.
Negative prompt for thumbnails
text, letters, words, watermark, signature, frame border, edge, elements in the bottom-right corner, cluttered composition, small details, too many objects, desaturated pastel tones, low contrast, excessive noise
The two most valuable items are "elements in the bottom-right corner", which is where the video's duration bar sits, and "low contrast", responsible for most of the thumbnails that disappear in the grid.
Seven mistakes that kill the click-through rate
- Cluttered composition. With no clean area, the text has nowhere to sit and the image turns into noise.
- Fine detail. Textures, patterns and small objects disappear at thumbnail size.
- Low contrast. Uniform mid-tones disappear among saturated thumbnails.
- Important element in the bottom-right corner. The duration bar will cover it.
- Small text. If it can't be read at 200 pixels wide, it doesn't work.
- File over 2 MB. YouTube rejects the upload.
- No visual pattern. Every thumbnail with a different font and color keeps viewers from recognizing the channel in the grid.
From generated file to published thumbnail
Four steps close the process.
Adjust to 1280 × 720. The generation rarely comes out at exactly that size. The resizer handles it, and if the aspect ratio is different from 16:9, cropping preserves more than stretching.
Add the text. Use add text to image with a large font, outline or shadow to guarantee legibility over any background.
Cut out elements, if needed. To paste a face or object over another background, removing the background gives you a transparent PNG.
Compress before uploading. Keep it under 2 MB with the image compressor. This is the last step, always after resizing.
💡 Correct order: generate → crop/resize to 1280×720 → add text → compress. Compressing before resizing wastes quality.
If you want to understand the strategic side — what makes a person click, how to test variations, and how to measure — the guide on how to create a YouTube thumbnail that gets more clicks covers that side, and the basic thumbnail walkthrough works as an introduction.
Checklist before publishing
- Is it 1280 × 720, 16:9 aspect ratio?
- Is the file under 2 MB?
- Can you identify the subject at 200 pixels wide?
- Is the bottom-right corner free?
- Does the text have an outline or shadow for legibility?
- Is there clear contrast between subject and background?
- Do the font and palette follow the channel's standard?
- Did you test how it looks next to other thumbnails in the niche?

Frequently asked questions
What's the right thumbnail size for YouTube?
The recommended resolution is 1280 by 720 pixels, in 16:9 aspect ratio, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. The file needs to be under 2 MB and can be JPG, PNG or GIF. It's worth generating directly in 16:9 instead of cropping afterward, because cropping almost always cuts the composition in a bad spot and wastes resolution.
Can I ask for the text directly in the prompt?
You can, and current models write words much better than they did a year ago. Even so, for thumbnails it's worth adding the text afterward: you control the font size, which needs to be much bigger than what the AI usually chooses, you can test title variations without regenerating the image, and you keep the same typography across all your videos, which helps viewers recognize the channel in the results grid.
Does an AI-made thumbnail hurt a video's reach?
There's no penalty for using an AI-generated image in a thumbnail. What matters to the algorithm is performance: click-through rate and retention. The real risk is indirect — thumbnails that promise something the video doesn't deliver generate clicks followed by quick abandonment, which hurts reach. An AI-generated image that faithfully represents the content has no disadvantage at all.
Why does my thumbnail look good on the computer but bad on mobile?
Because on mobile it appears at a fraction of the size. Fine details, textures and medium-sized text that look great on a big screen simply disappear. The fix is to limit the image to at most two focal points, use high contrast between the subject and background, and always test by shrinking it to around 200 pixels wide before publishing.
Should I use a face in the thumbnail?
Faces with a clear expression tend to grab attention, especially in vlog, reaction and entertainment niches. But it's not a universal rule: tech, cooking and education channels often perform better with the object or result front and center. The practical criterion is whatever communicates the content fastest at thumbnail size. If the video's subject is a product, the product usually sells better than the face.
My file is over 2 MB. What do I do?
Compress it before uploading, and do that as the last step of the workflow. The order that preserves the most quality is to resize to 1280 by 720 first, add the text, and only then compress. Converting from PNG to JPG also reduces file size a lot in images with no transparency, which is the case for most thumbnails.
