How to use the HEIC & HEIF Converter
HEIC and HEIF store excellent-quality photos in files far smaller than JPG. HEIF is a standard from the MPEG group; HEIC is the variant Apple adopted in iOS 11, and recent Android phones record in the same format, usually with the .heif extension. The problem is that neither is natively supported by most operating systems and platforms outside the Apple ecosystem. Does converting HEIC or HEIF to JPG lose quality?
JPG and WebP are lossy formats, so there's always a recompression step. The tool converts at high quality — 92% for JPG and 90% for WebP — enough for the result to be visually indistinguishable from the original in typical photos, at a much smaller file size. If you need zero loss, choose PNG as the output format, which is lossless.
Is HEIF the same as HEIC? Is it an Apple format?
Not quite. HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) is an MPEG standard, published in 2015 as ISO/IEC 23008-12 — it wasn't created by Apple. It's a container, and it can hold images compressed with different codecs. HEIC is that same container with the images encoded in HEVC (H.265), which is the combination Apple adopted in iOS 11 and gave that name. So every HEIC is a HEIF, but not every HEIF is a HEIC. In practice almost every .heif file in circulation also uses HEVC inside, and this tool converts both the same way. The rare exception is a .heif using the AV1 codec (the same one behind AVIF) instead of HEVC — that one isn't recognised here.
