What is EXIF data and why remove it?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is an international standard that digital cameras and smartphones use to automatically record technical information inside the image file at the moment of capture. This metadata is invisible in normal photo viewing, but anyone with access to the file can easily read it using free tools available online.

Information stored in EXIF metadata includes: device model and manufacturer, exact date and time of capture, technical camera settings (aperture, ISO, shutter speed), image resolution, and — the most sensitive data of all — the exact GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken. In photos taken with smartphones, this location can be accurate to within meters.

When sharing images on social media, marketplaces, forums, e-commerce sites, or even by email without first removing EXIF, you may inadvertently expose your home location, daily routine, or the devices you use. This represents a real privacy risk — especially for photos taken at home, at work, or in places you visit regularly.

Professional photographers and agencies also remove metadata before delivering or publishing images to protect client privacy, avoid exposing the equipment used, and eliminate any unwanted digital trace in the final delivered photos.

Our EXIF removal tool processes everything locally in your browser — no file is ever sent to external servers. The process is fast, free, and requires no sign-up. The result is a clean copy of the original image, with the same visual quality, completely free of embedded metadata. Ideal for anyone who wants to share photos safely and preserve their digital privacy.

Frequently asked questions

Is image quality affected?
For JPG, the image is reprocessed via the browser's canvas. The default quality is 95%, preserving excellent visual fidelity. For PNG and WEBP, the image is saved with no perceptible quality loss. File size may vary slightly.
What data is removed?
All embedded metadata is erased: GPS location, date and time, camera manufacturer and model, settings (ISO, aperture, speed), editing software data, ICC color profile, and any other EXIF, IPTC, or XMP fields present in the file.
Are my files sent to any server?
No. All processing happens in your browser using the Canvas and FileReader APIs. Not a single byte of your image travels over the internet. You could even use the tool with Wi-Fi turned off.
Can I process several photos at once?
Yes. Select or drag as many images as you want at once. Each processed file is downloaded individually with the suffix _no-exif in the name, keeping the original intact.
Why is it important to remove EXIF metadata before publishing photos online?
Photos with EXIF metadata can expose sensitive information without the user realizing it: the GPS location of home or work, the exact date and time of capture, and the device model. Platforms like Instagram and Facebook automatically strip EXIF data, but sites, portfolios, marketplaces, and email usually keep this data intact.
